School-Based Examples of Positive Reinforcement and Negative Reinforcement
Positive Reinforcement
In schools, positive reinforcement includes rewarding a behavior to encourage it to repeat. Positive reinforcement occurs when a teacher compliments a pupil for finishing homework on time. Praise and possibly prizes are positive outcomes; thus, the student is more likely to complete assignments quickly to obtain praise and prizes. Positive outcomes reinforce homework completion, creating a cycle.
Negative Reinforcement
Negative reinforcement is a strategy educators employ to enhance the likelihood of the future occurrence of a specific behavior. Educators employ this reinforcement when they opt to eliminate an undesirable stimulus or condition as a means of encouraging or reinforcing desired behavior (IRIS Center, 2023). A kid who suffers from math may act out to avoid difficult tasks. In response, the teacher exempts students from these math tasks for disruptive behavior. Exemption from the painful task (difficult arithmetic problems) for disruptive behavior is negative reinforcement (IRIS Center, 2023). Since it eliminates the unpleasant duty, the student's disruptive behavior is promoted.
In classroom management, positive and negative reinforcement work well. Teachers can use them to promote and discourage behavior. However, educators must ethically apply these ideas to ensure that reinforcement tactics support educational goals and healthy learning environments. Positive reinforcement can help children engage in academic tasks and habits that help them
